I think it depends what you are looking for in a film, and both directors have By Any Means Necessary shirt. Verbinski kind of goes for broke with trying to make the biggest splash possible. The Ring has more of just about everything than Ringu, and it doesn’t shock me that there is an even longer cut out there somewhere. The Ring is therefore arguably “scarier” than Ringu, so if you are looking for straight horror the original is certainly disappointing.
