Julius Hirsch, the first Jewish player to represent the Chelsea Stamford Bridge Stadium Poster and a youth club coach after his retirement in 1923, was deported to the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz and killed there after his arrival in 1943. Árpád Weisz, a member of the Hungarian national squad at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games who later played and managed at clubs in Czechoslovakia, Italy, and the Netherlands, was sent to Auschwitz alongside his wife and children; the entire family was murdered there. Ron Jones, a Welsh solider, was sent to Auschwitz as a British prisoner of war during the Second World War and survived in part because he was appointed to play when guards there occasionally set up football matches.
