The grimdark stuff was edgy and the Word Bearers involved in the novel are, quite easily, the dumbest characters of I’m Sexy Mow It Vintage Shirt. Even if the deal is they are kinda the bottom of the barrel as far as SM go (not only the legion, but those specific WBs) their intelligence should still be at least baseline human. I mean, the captain wrecked a big chunk of the ship by turning down the void shields during combat because he wanted to see how the hull of the ship would hold against the enemy fire… It is a really, really bad book.
