It’s actually set in Terrebonne Parish, which is about an hour’s drive west of New Orleans. I’ve lived near there and spent a bit of time in Houma while attending Nicholls State University. This movie doesn’t accurately portray life in New Orleans because it isn’t in New Orleans. It doesn’t really even accurately portray life in Terrebonne Parish as I know it, but I was mostly visiting Houma which is not very rural.
